What Is a Breast
Augmentation with a
Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation with mastopexy, also known as a Breast Lift, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure for women who want to achieve their ideal breast size, shape, and symmetry. How a woman feels about her breasts can be directly tied to her self-esteem. For women who feel that breast augmentation alone may not help them achieve their desired results, a breast augmentation with mastopexy may be the perfect procedure.

During the breast augmentation procedure, modern breast implants are typically placed behind the pectoral muscle. This one procedure alone may not be the remedy to help sagging breasts. A breast lift surgery is when the breast is reshaped through the removal of excess skin, and the remaining skin is tightened. Breast lifts lead to improvement in the overall shape of the breast, and the nipple and areola are lifted into a more upright, youthful position. This breast enhancement procedure provides the breasts with a complete makeover, leaving a woman with full, firm, and youthful breasts.

What Causes Breasts to Change Shape?

Breasts will change shape over the course of every woman’s life, from the growing buds of puberty to the full and firm breasts of her 20s. As a woman reaches the age of 40, she may notice significant changes to the firmness, fullness, and size of her breasts. Unfortunately, age is not the only cause of breast shape change.
The main factor in age-related breast changes is due to a decline in the production of estrogen. The reduction in estrogen found in the body will cause the skin and the existing breast tissue to become less hydrated, thus losing their elasticity. You may notice that your breasts become less firm and lose the fullness they once had. Stretch marks, widening between the breasts, downward pointed nipples, and an elongated, stretched appearance are all common changes that occur to a woman’s breasts as she gets older. Dr. Berardi can help reverse the clock on your breast changes by performing breast augmentation with mastopexy, allowing you to once again experience the full and firm breasts of your younger years.
Gravity is what women must contend with daily, no matter their age, number of pregnancies, or weight. Gravity continually pulls down on natural breast tissue over the years. This causes the breast tissue to lose its elasticity. It can cause breasts to take on a drooping, sagging appearance, known clinically as ptosis. For some women, though, sagging breasts are simply due to their DNA. A breast augmentation with lift, or mastopexy, performed by Dr. Berardi may be the perfect way to circumvent your genetics.

Breasts change drastically during and after pregnancy  . Throughout the course of a woman's pregnancy, the breasts will become heavier and denser as they prepare for the arrival of your baby. Stretch marks may begin to form as the breast tissue stretches, and the areolas and nipples may darken in appearance. You will notice during pregnancy that your breast size may increase by a full cup or even more. After pregnancy, and once breastfeeding has stopped, your breasts may remain larger or become saggy in appearance. This is due to the breast tissue having lost its elasticity during the rapid changes of pregnancy. The length of time breastfeeding, genetics, and weight fluctuations during pregnancy can all have an impact on breast shape, which can be resolved by  breast augmentation  and breast lift.

Weight gain or loss and fluctuating hormones can also cause breasts to change shape. Each time you gain or lose weight, the breast tissue loses some more of its elasticity. This causes the breast tissue to be unable to snap back into its normal position. Rapid weight loss is the hardest on breast tissue. Collagen production is disrupted as the skin hurries to shrink back into place. This leads to a deflated appearance of the breasts that Dr. Berardi can help correct through breast augmentation with mastopexy.

Breast Augmentation with Lift Techniques

Dr. Berardi provides a variety of breast augmentation with lift methods uniquely suited to every patient’s skin, elasticity, and aesthetic desires. These breast procedures vary in incision, lift amount, and implant positioning:
Crescent Lift with Augmentation
It involves a small, crescent-shaped cut on top of the areola. Most often, it is combined with a breast implant to address minor drooping. Dr. Berardi raises the nipple a little bit and adds volume with an implant. This way, he makes a more youthful appearance with minimal scarring. It is best suited for women with minor drooping as well as well-toned skin.
Most ideally suited for mild to moderate sagging, this procedure involves making an incision along the areola. Dr. Berardi inserts the implant through this entry location, tightening around it and elevating the nipple. It reduces areola size as well and is discreet since it blends with areola pigmentation.
The method is suited for modest sagging and does permit more dramatic reshaping. It consists of a circumferential incision within the areola, as well as a vertical incision from there down to the breastfold. Dr. Berardi elevates the breast, relocates the nipple, and inserts the implant. This way, he reestablishes firmness, fullness, and symmetry in one procedure.
The most complete procedure for breast augmentation patients with high sagging and deflation is the anchor lift. Three incisions are made: one around the areola, one down toward the breast fold, and one along the fold. Since it can remove a great amount of excess skin, it allows our experienced breast surgeon to lift the breasts significantly, as well as place an implant for complete upper pole fullness and balance. It’s best for post-weight loss or post-pregnancy makeovers.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants come prefilled with a thick, cohesive silicone gel that duplicates the feel and movement of natural breast tissue. More women prefer silicone because of its softer, more natural texture. What is more, these are an option during breast reduction surgery. They help patients get a breast shape that is smaller and more lifted.

Saline Implants

Saline implants have sterile salt water inside them, which are implanted in an empty state and filled once implanted. They provide a uniform firmness and shape and can be safely reabsorbed by the body if they leak. Saline implants may be a good option for women who like a firmer sensation or desire a smaller incision.

Gummy Bear Implants

Also referred to as form-stable implants, gummy bear implants contain a thicker layer of silicone gel that will maintain its shape even in the event of shell fracture. Gummy bear implants have a characteristic teardrop shape with a natural slope and upper pole definition. They are particularly favored by women who desire a more natural look and feel.

Breast Implants Options

For breast augmentation, there are three types of implants patients have to choose from: saline, silicone, and gummy bear implants. Each one presents its own advantages based on a patient’s desired look, lifestyle, and body shape.
During the initial breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Berardi performs a detailed analysis to determine the ideal lift procedure and type of implant for a patient’s physique, desires, and lifestyle. He educates patients on how to distinguish between saline and silicone implants, counseling them on the most desirable outcome for appearance and feel. He speaks with patients regarding anesthesia, captures pre-operative photos for before-and-after analysis, and gives a custom quote for the total procedure.
To ensure a patient’s safety, our surgeon performs a complete health evaluation as well as a review of their medical history. Certain tests, including blood tests, a mammogram (for women older than 40), and an EKG, might be ordered. These are read closely to ensure it is safe to have this breast surgery. There are a number of conditions that can defer or make breast augmentation with a lift contraindicated, including:

Breast Augmentation Surgery with Mastopexy Overview

A breast augmentation surgery with a lift typically lasts between two to three and a half hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery that needs to be performed. The patient will first be placed under anesthesia. Dr. Berardi will then begin the procedure by making an incision in the skin. The location, length, and pattern of this skin incision will depend on the type and size of of the implant that you choose, implant you choose, your breast measurements, and the clinical judgment of Dr. Berardi. All incisions will be inconspicuous and leave minimal surgical scars.
Once the skin incision is made, the breast implant surgery procedure will begin. Dr. Berardi will begin to separate the breast tissue, allowing him to make the space, or pocket, where the breast implant will be placed. With the recommendation of Dr. Berardi during your consult, you will choose between two types of breast implants: silicone gel breast implants or saline implants.
The breast implant will then be placed in one of two locations: sub-glandular, meaning below the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle, or submuscular, meaning below the pectoral muscle. The implant will be moved into the proper position by hand or a touch-free device to ensure that symmetry and the desired appearance are achieved. The different placement options for your breast implants will be discussed with Dr. Berardi before your procedure.
Following the breast implant placement, Dr. Berardi will begin the breast lift. Incisions are made along pre-marked lines, and the breast is reshaped around the areola and nipple. This area is tightened and pulled together, lifting the breast. Excess skin will be removed, but the areola and nipple will remain attached to the underlying breast tissue. Internal, dissolvable sutures will be used to close the incisions once the breast is properly shaped.

Recovery After a Breast Augmentation with Lift

Immediate Recovery
Recovery from breast augmentation with mastopexy surgery will vary from patient to patient. Patients can expect to go home one to two hours after the completion of surgery. After undergoing breast augmentation with lift, mild pain and discomfort can be expected. Dr. Berardi will prescribe the proper medications to alleviate all the discomfort.
Results from the surgery will be seen immediately, but residual swelling may persist for a few weeks following the operation. Dr. Berardi may help fit you with a surgical bra or dressing that will help minimize this swelling. The compression dressing will also help provide support and comfort as you begin to heal.
Patients will need to take it easy for up to 6 weeks following surgery to avoid any complications (such as implant rupture or capsular contracture) and allow healing to take place. Dr. Berardi and his staff will ensure you have thorough post-operative instructions and answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

Your breasts will continue to change shape throughout your lifetime. Results will be noticeable immediately after surgery, but it can take up to a year for the full results of your breast augmentation with mastopexy to become apparent. While breast augmentation with mastopexy cannot stop the aging process completely, it can offer women a way to have fuller, firmer, and more youthful breasts for years to come.

Are You a Candidate for
Breast Augmentation
with Mastopexy?

If you are a woman who is looking to increase the size of your breasts as well as restore them to a more upright and youthful position, a breast augmentation with mastopexy may be right for you. Women who are currently breastfeeding should wait to have surgery. Breast augmentation with mastopexy candidates should be over the age of 18 and have realistic expectations of surgery results.

Here are some possible candidates:
The procedure is particularly suited for women whose breasts have become deflated and started drooping as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, loss of weight, or aging. They get back volume as well as height for a fresh, young look.
Stretching and sagging breasts often affect women following childbirth. A breast lift with augmentation treats both issues with a tightening of tissue as well as a restoration of fullness.
If one breast is lower than the other or if the nipples sit below the crease, this procedure can reshape and align as well as provide volume enhancement.
Changes in body weight, as well as aging, may result in breasts appearing flat or stretched out. Augmentation with lift recontours the breast mound and restores fullness.
Patients should be in healthy physical condition with no health issues that would hinder healing. Being healthy allows a smooth recovery process and a successful surgery.
Breastfeeding changes breast form and tissue. Surgery should be scheduled after lactation has ended in order to have stable outcomes.
Nicotine retards healing, leading to an enhanced risk of post-operative complications. Thus, patients should be smoking abstainers or stop at least 4 weeks prior to surgery.
Dr. Berardi can help determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation with mastopexy during your comprehensive consultation.

Benefits of a Breast Augmentation with Lift

Better Breast Appearance and Size
This surgery increases breast firmness and fullness by using a lift along with implants. It eliminates loose skin while also adding volume, giving breasts a more rounded, youthful look and improved upper pole projection.
Nipples and areolas are moved higher on the chest during a breast lift to create a more natural, youthful appearance. This can relieve physical discomfort from sagging skin or downward-pointing nipples—and has the added bonus of making breasts look better overall.
When breast lift surgery is combined with augmentation, it not only makes uneven breasts equal in size, but it also creates better overall body balance—meaning clothes fit better all over. The result is a more symmetrically proportioned (and happier) patient.
The operation also seems to boost self-esteem in the long term. Patients report feeling not just more confident and attractive after the surgical procedure but also happier with their bodies. As a result, their social interactions may improve, and they may stand up straighter. In short, they may find that their well-being receives a welcome lift.
After undergoing this procedure, a lot of women feel more self-assured and at ease in intimate situations. They find that with their breasts restored to the right size and shape, they are able to be freer and more confident – as well as feeling sexier.
Many women ask, “Is breast augmentation painful?” Most report feeling discomfort as manageable with medication and support. Due to sophisticated techniques and diligent post-surgery treatment, pain tends to be temporary, fading within a couple of days, making recovery more comfortable than anticipated.
