Microneedling
in Scottsdale, AZ

Microneedling offers a minimally invasive solution for patients looking to rejuvenate their skin and address a variety of everyday concerns. Many seek this treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, or uneven texture, while others are looking to improve overall skin tone and stimulate collagen production. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, microneedling encourages the body’s natural healing process, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

Our professional team in Scottsdale tailors each microneedling session to meet individual goals, helping patients feel confident in their skin and refreshed in their appearance.

What Is Microneedling?

Collagen and elastin are the essential protein fibers in the skin that give it support and elasticity. As we age, these fibers break down and can cause wrinkles.

Microneedling involves creating controlled micro-injuries with fine needles to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. This treatment is most often used on the face, but you can get it on your legs, neck, back, or other areas with damaged skin. The microneedling procedure helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, scarring, pore size, and hyperpigmentation. This minimally invasive treatment requires no downtime.

What Does Microneedling Help With?

What Can I Expect During My Treatment?

Dr Berardi and his team carefully listen to what patients are looking to accomplish and ensure that all concerns are addressed during their consultations. We will look at your skin, review your health history, and understand your goals. At the end of these consultations, patients feel confident that our recommendations will meet their unique goals.
If you are interested in proceeding with the microneedling procedure, you may be asked to stop using some topical creams, retinoids, or lotions to prepare for your first treatment. You may also be asked to refrain from taking some medications that may impact your body’s reaction to the procedure.

A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area to ensure maximum comfort prior to the procedure. Our aesthetician then uses a SkinPen device to create thousands of controlled microchannels in the top layer of the skin to trigger your body’s natural wound-healing cascade. The microneedles create shallow, repetitive punctures in the skin. The idea is that the microneedles cause minor skin damage, which initiates the healing process. This causes the body to produce new collagen and elastin to heal the treated area, proteins that help to keep your skin smooth and firm. The healing process after the microneedling procedure can help reduce redness and dark spots and improve skin elasticity.

During the procedure, you may experience a warming or scratching sensation in the treatment area. If the affected area is near bone, you may experience a little more discomfort during the procedure. After microneedling is complete, you will be provided with a calming agent or other creams to support the skin’s healing process.
Most microneedling sessions take approximately 30 minutes. It may take multiple procedures to help you achieve the results that you are looking for. Follow-up and maintenance sessions may be required to ensure efficacy after your sessions.

What Does Recovery Look Like?

Microneedling is an outpatient procedure. You will not need much recovery time in the office, aside from brief observation. In most cases, patients can leave within an hour of the procedure’s completion.
Following your treatment, your skin may appear pink and flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. Redness typically subsides the next day, but some patients experience redness for 2-3 days. You may have slight swelling, and your skin will feel tight.
We recommend avoiding workouts for 24 hours, using a sauna or hot tub, and sun exposure. Your skin may be more sensitive to sun damage in the 24-48 hours following the procedure. Avoid exfoliants, AHAs/BHAS for 5 days. Downtime for this treatment is 3-5 days.
Rare reactions may include bruising or an allergic response. Our team will advise on how to proceed if you are concerned about any abnormal reactions or effects outside the expected range.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Are Recommended?

We recommend booking a consultation with our medical aesthetician to address your skin concerns and goals. Microneedling can be used anywhere on the body, but the most common areas are the face, neck, décolleté, and scars. Typically, 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are recommended. Maintenance treatments may be needed to maintain progress or prevent further damage. Dr Berardi may also recommend additional therapies beyond microneedling to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Microneedling Add-On: PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

One of the most popular enhancements to microneedling is PRP, also known as the “vampire facial.” This add-on involves drawing a small amount of your own blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is infused back into your skin during the same session to boost results.

Benefits of Adding PRP

  • Infuses your own natural growth factors for enhanced healing and collagen stimulation

  • Helps lift and break down unwanted pigmentation for a brighter, more even complexion

  • Adds nutrients back into the skin for a healthy, radiant glow

  • Complements SkinPen microneedling for smoother texture and improved tone

During treatment, the PRP is applied directly while the microneedling device creates microchannels, allowing for deep absorption. Most patients describe the experience as a mild prickling sensation with minimal discomfort.

Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is considered safe for patients in overall good health. This treatment may not be a good idea for individuals who are currently taking medications for active acne or those with severe psoriasis or eczema. Microneedling is suitable for many cosmetic concerns:

  • Surgical scars

  • Acne scars or other mild scarring

  • Improves skin texture and smoothness

  • Helps diminish acne scars, surgical scars, and other types of scarring

  • Evens out skin tone and addresses darker skin tones safely

Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling

While microneedling involves needles, the pain level depends on your pain tolerance. Many refer to the microneedling procedure as “uncomfortable” but not necessarily painful. The experience is like someone gently rubbing sandpaper on your face. Depending on the area being treated and the depth of the procedure, the pain level may vary. It is important to note that the needles used are tiny and that the pain they cause is minimal.

Some patients have reported that treating areas with thinner skin, such as the mouth or eyes, is a little more painful. Because the microneedling procedure is fairly quick, any pain or discomfort does not last long. Our team cares for patient comfort and can use numbing agents to help minimize unpleasant sensations.

Stay out of the sun and avoid scheduling major events during the week after the procedure. Use gentle cleaners and hydrating lotions that help to stimulate the healing.
Those with inflammatory acne, active bacterial or viral infections (such as cold sores), or active inflammatory skin conditions (such as psoriasis or rosacea) should avoid microneedling. It is important to consult with Dr. Berardi if you feel you have sensitive skin.
While both procedures aim to improve the appearance and texture of the skin, there are distinct differences between the two treatments. Microdermabrasion does not utilize needles but looks to activate the skin’s healing ability, similar to microneedling. Microdermabrasion uses a device with a rough edge, like sandpaper, to exfoliate the top layer of the skin. Microneedling penetrates deeper and is much more effective for treating skin issues like acne scars.
Microneedling can be effective in encouraging hair growth. Additional procedures may also be recommended alongside microneedling if stimulating hair growth is the goal.
When treating acne scars with microneedling, Scottsdale patients benefit from a process that uses tiny needles to stimulate collagen production and encourage the skin’s natural healing. This treatment can improve the appearance of acne scars, deeper wrinkles, and even stretch marks, helping restore a smoother, more youthful appearance. Microneedling is safe for a variety of skin types, though it’s essential to avoid sun exposure before and after sessions to protect your skin. During your consultation, our medical aesthetician will develop a personalized treatment plan and discuss potential accommodations related to your skin concerns, ensuring you achieve your desired results safely and effectively.
While there are many microneedling products on the market that are perfectly safe for at-home use, they are not recommended. Working with our experienced and caring team will be more effective because we can provide medical knowledge and guide your healing toward your goal.
In most cases, the best results from microneedling are seen after about 3 months, as the body repairs itself. During the process of repairing itself, the skin will produce new collagen, giving it a smoother, tighter look and feel. Microneedling provides a long-lasting solution by using the body’s own elastin and collagen. We lose collagen as we age, so maintenance treatments are recommended to help maintain the results.
Yes! Microneedling can be combined with other cosmetic procedures to enhance skin rejuvenation and overall results. Many patients begin integrating microneedling with dermal fillers, laser treatments, or chemical peels for a comprehensive approach. This combination promotes collagen formation, smooths the skin’s surface, and provides a visible improvement in texture, tone, and firmness. When paired with other treatments, microneedling offers an effective treatment for aging skin, boosting radiant skin and a youthful glow with minimal downtime. Your provider will guide you on timing and sequencing during the microneedling process to ensure optimal results.
Dermatologists and plastic surgeons have performed millions of microneedling procedures since the 1990s, with a solid safety record. The only potential side effect is mild redness and swelling after the treatment. The effects are temporary and should not affect your overall health.
